Gobalay means “people of Gobá”, Gobá being an ancestral deity, founder and father of the Gobalay. Gobá may also be name for a long forgotten place or homeland.

History

The Gobalay are descended from a Thalsic group who most likely migrated from the east some time in the Jade Epoch. They originally inhabited the whole Gorval peninsula, particularly the uplands which were cooler and safe from storm tides. They were a fierce tribal people who constantly warred on each other, and were considered barbarians by the Gaals and other northeastern peoples.

Towards the end of the Qedjeen Dynasty in Gaalkedch, the Gaal kings, who were traditionally subordinate to the Gaal Matriarchy, hired Gobalay mercenaries as royal guards, an independent elite force to replace the degenerated Gaal military.

The Gobalay Guard eventually led a coup against the Qedjeen, throwing the Gaal imperium into anarchy and civil war which eventually led to the creation of the Empire of Dor-en-Sann. The new empire brought some wealth to Gorval, but as their influence declined in the empire, the province slipped into peaceful rural obscurity.
