The river is officially named the Sargil throughout its length, though in practice the lower reach of the river to the sea is called the Vildon.

The forested upper Sargil Valley was the traditional home of the Gyeil people, who gave it the name. It was called Vildon by the Daltirich, during the centuries of occupation by the Kingdom of Deltirot, and officially renamed during the Ororran conquest of the region.
