Storm tides

Storm tides are particularly high tides, often accompanied by storm surges and dangerous flooding, which occur on Helevos every 1.3 solar years when Helevos comes into conjunction with the giant planet Kwato'orplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigKwato'or

Kwato’or (KWAT-oh-oor) is the six planet of Cordes in the Cronox System.

It is a gas supergiant, violent and beautiful, with titanic eternal storm systems coloured white and all shades from pale lilac to deep purple. It is a true giant, approximately 2.4 Jovian masses, so big that it causes the
. Storm tides are at their peak within a two week period, and at their most severe when accompanied by natural storms.

Storm tides are vital to the life cycle of many virid plants and animals, but present a great danger to shipping and coastal settlements.

Tide Season

The coastlines of Helevos only experience weak daily tides of less than a metre, caused by the moon Thea.

. During this period, the alignment of Kwato'or, the moons and the sun creates unusually high tides, varying with coastal geography. When combined with stormy weather and onshore winds, it can create several weeks of devastating tidal waves.

The storm tide season can last up to four weeks, though usually has only ten days or so of particularly high tides. Usually tides increase in severity over this period, then decrease. However, the incidence and severity of each tide varies according to a number of factors.

Governing Factors

Although storm tides occur regularly every 1.3 years, their severity is variable and can be difficult to predict. Many factors influence the height of tides, including weather, geography, time of the solar year and most particularly, alignment of the celestial bodies.

Tides are strongest when Helevos is closest to the sun, when it is closest to Kwato'or, and when the moon Thea is closest to the planet. Helevos' slightly irregular orbit means that these factors progress in cycles, but it is extremely rare for these three to coincide.

Cultural Significance

Many different calendars have been used during Helevos' long history. Most societies used individual calendars starting either with their founding, or from some religious or political event. This made comparative history a confusing subject, particularly with the passage of time.
on the solar year, many coastal and sea-faring peoples have based their religions and calendars on this regular inundation. The ancient Iskean culture was heavily reliant on the sea, and their calendar was refined as the Junda Stormscale.
