One thaum is the standard energy potential contained in a single shell of an elemental. In energy terms this varies between elementals and even between shells, since outer shells tend to be weaker than inner shells. One thaum is colloquially said to be “one finger of a lightning bolt”.
In practical terms the thaum is used as a measure of how many energy shells, and therefore how many elementals, are required to perform a particular task. Therefore all sequents are given an energy requirement in thaums.
