Terms for Practitioners of Magic

Thaumaturge

In the Rasian Academy style of magic, a thaumaturge (proto-Ahngrit “miracle worker”) is a practicioner of thaumaturgy, vulgarly called as magic. There are many names for magical practitioners, largely dependent on the culture of both the practitioner and the attitude of the speaker.

Magister

In the Anrel Isles, thaumaturges are officially called magisters. This term became prominent under the Magisteriate, the period in which the Rasian Academy was entirely ruled by the Magisters.

In the classical period of the Rasian Academy only senior academics became members of the Court of Magisters.

Sorceror

In the Anrel Isles, sorcerers are thaumaturges who, unlike full magisters, lack the skills and ability to summon and control elementals alone. Instead sorcerors used sources assigned to them by a magister, usually limited to specific tasks. They carried out technical tasks considered beneath the dignity of full magisters, such as assisting trades and crafts. As qualified graduates of the Rasian Academy, were also employed as advisor to civic officials.

Magician

Academics considered magician a vulgar term, applicable to sorcerors who “debased” their art by using it for entertainment.
