Apotropy is the discipline of protection from magical attack between primes and other elementals. Thaumaturgical duelling involves three methods of attack: attempting to break or override the opponent's vinculum, his authority of his elementals; direct attack on the physical shell structure of the opposing elemental itself, and physical attacks on the opposing thaumaturge using kinesis.
Wardcraft since it is uses the discipline of kinesis to create barriers against physical assault, or to block or immobilise aggressors. Wardcraft is not only used in magical duelling, but more generally for personal defence.
Given that thaumaturges use both apotropic and kinetic wards in their personal security, they are considered the same field.
