Brass ants are social animals living in burrows of fifty or so individuals. Brass ants scavenge all kinds of organic material, cutting it into manageable pieces. They don't actually consume it. Instead they cut into manageable pieces and take it to a special chamber in the burrow. There it is it broken down by a variety of fruiting spor, which is their actual food.
