The Rasian Academy is the common name for the Grand Academy of Rasia, the greatest institution of magic and learning in the Anrel Isles.
The Gnosticians were originally founded to study the origins of god-elementals, or 'deitals', and the cults that surrounded them, in order to limit the evolution of new gods and limit their influence. The Gnostician Library, amassed over several centuries, contained a vast array of works of ritual, comparative theology, myth, prophecy, esoteric writings and descriptions of the fundamental nature and properties of various gods.

The Grammarians were one of the three great Schools of Thought in the golden age of the Rasian Academy. Grammarians believed that words and language were the key effective magic, and sought the purest, most concise and elegant words and structures. Grammarians also studied human languages of all kinds.languagelanguage, who dismissed their study of 'deitals' as at best naive, at worst dangerous. In the past there have been moves to banish gnosticians from Rasia altogether, and all gnostics are officially banned from the archives. Several centuries before the time of Belikast, the Magisters forbade students from dabbling in the field of gnostics, so that students trained in the Gnostician school could only be lay members of the Academy.
