History

The sign language originated in isolated villages of the Gorval Highlands, who had a high incidence of congenital deafness, the result of cultural inbreeding. Both non-hearing and hearing villagers learned sign, which not only helped communication with deaf villagers, but had the additional benefit of enabling hunters to communicate silently without disturbing prey, or to silently co-ordinate strategy when facing enemies.

When the Gobalay seized control of the former Gaal Empire in the Gobalay Coup, they brought many peasant attendants to serve them in the style to which they were accustomed. Many of these servants were highland signers. In the high court of the first great Emperor Gebjon Vequidch, it became an advantage for these servants to be able to communicate with each other discreetly whilst serving at imperial functions, and so eventually all servants learned sign.

In the classical imperial period it became compulsory for servants to communicate only with sign, hence the servant area of the imperial court was known as the 'Silent Quarter'.

A modern form of kilili is still used by deaf people not only in modern Gorval but throughout Ororr. Its compulsory use as a servile language was outlawed by the early government of Ororrplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigOrorr
