In common terms, magic is the art of producing a desired outcome through occult means. Various arts are described as magical, from common street illusionists, village herbalists, and rituals for the intercession of deities. However, true magic is the art and science of elemental mastery, harnessing elemental creatures and instructing them to perform simple or complex tasks.
cannot restore life once a body is truly deceased, other than by resuscitating a person whose heart or breathing have recently stopped. Necromancy therefore treats bodies like puppets. An elemental attaches itself to the skeleton, and moves the bones and joints in a parody of life. Magic also cannot prevent decay and putrefaction of the corpse, other than by keeping it cold. Skilled necromancers can animate the lips and lungs of a corpse to “speak”, though this is complex and difficult.

Necromancy was used by the hierophants of the ancient civilisation of Traithe to terrorise and control their slave population.
