The university was founded in the 5th century ME to educate the priesthood of the Church of Hartrah, with a core curriculum of law, philosophy and divinity. Its high educational standards attracted the sons of the nobility, and it flourished particularly during the Hartheran Commonwealth when its curriculum broadened into natural sciences, mathematics, history, rhetoric, poetics and other fields of study.
Today it is still the pre-eminent institution for the church and for those hoping to enter government, though in terms of practical research it has been eclipsed by Harlon University.
The university occupies a campus to the east of the great Basilica of Holy Hart, in what is left of the old Royal Palace of the Commonwealth, built in the time of Queen Shoyvah.
