citizens are expected to speak Hartraan for official and public use, but in practice most rural people in central and southern Harthera speak local languages as their first language, have only limited exposure to the language. Hartraan is mainly a first language in the north of the country, and in the major cities, but at best a second language in the south and southwest.

Hartraan is a member of the Iskean language family, since it retains much of the core structure of Junda and the Chelidt dialects of northern Harthera. However it has a very significant proportion, even a majority, of vocabulary from Saloyan and other Eloyoun languages, so that the modern language is a blending of the two.

Features

Hartraan speech commonly uses confirmation markers to indicate a questions: for yes, gàsé for no. For example if a host asks a guest “You will stay for dinner gàsé”, its meaning can range from an abrupt dismissal to an inferior, to an entreaty to stay to a superior who has declared their intention to leave.
