Baronies of Ravorr (Rouvawa)

to 288 ME. It first formed as an alliance against the expansionist ambitions of its Saloyan neighbours to the north. With the rise of Harthera in the first century, there were a succession of vicious wars both along the borders, at sea, and along the coast. The Baronies became involved in a succession of internal conflicts stirred up by Hartheranplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigHarthera

were the Grand Palatinate of Saloya, and the Kingdom of Oonar. After the Oonari Civil War in 573 BME, many northerly regions on the rich borderlands between Oonar and Saloya declared independence, with individual warlords creating their own feudal fiefdoms or “baronies” (Rav. The Eloyoun people are an ethnic group found throughout eastern and northeastern Anásthias. They are the majority ethnicity in Kahtoyn and most of southern Harthera. Modern Hartheran language and culture is a blend of Eloyoun and Iskean.

This state of affairs continued until the collapse of the Saloyan state in 3 MEplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigModern Epoch (ME)

, following the massacre of the Palatine and his court by the Junda. In the ensuing power vacuum, South Saloya seceded from the nation, resulting in perhaps the bloodiest period of recent history, with Saloya being fought over not only by rival factions, but the Junda and Chelidt too.

Towards the end of the war, with South Saloya being invaded by the Chelidt, neighbouring Ravorran barons invaded in attempt to secure booty and new territory. Local Saloyan warlords also arose to protect their own cities and homes.

When the dust had settled, there were a number of new Baronies along the southern border, which despite antipathy towards each other, were united in their opposition to Chelidt dominance.

Under the new nation of Harthera, with its uneasy blend of Junda, Saloyan and Chelidt peoples, there were constant rumblings along the southern border, and five serious wars between Harthera and the Baronies.

Politics

FIXME

The states are described collectively as “baronies”, but the states great varied in size, power and internal politics. Some were led by a supreme monarch or military general, others by traditional chieftains, while a few had ruling councils with elements of republican governance. They formed a loose union in defence from large nations to the north and south, particularly Saloya and Oonar.

Oonari Civil War in Second Ravorran War

Saloya was an anti-feudal, anti-theocratic market society, strongly based on the rule of law, the antithesis of Ravorr. Many of the Baronies had embraced a corrupted version of Miyarrain religion, particularly in the later period, with the Barons setting themselves up as priest-kings through often highly dubious displays.

Baronial politics was a complex affair but as a union they had so powerful number of men at arms that they could call up and mobilise quickly in defence of their borders. With a large standing army there were constant internal squabbles, conducted in an almost ritualised manner that maintained the cohesion of the state, whilst allowing various Barons to gain power. However, the system meant that one faction was never able to entirely dominate: when one leader rose to too great a prominence, the others were obliged to obliterate him.
