plants and virid spores and insects. Some subspecies are scavengers, consuming rotting material and the choice parts of animal carcasses.

Humbers somewhat resemble bats but are of a different order, having independently articulated wings which are adaptations of their four paws. Many of the larger species also have long quills which act somewhat like feathers, and can be coloured yellow, red and brown. Most species of humbers do not engage in true flight, instead using a form of jump-gliding from place to place using their powerful legs. The quilled humbers are capable of flight over much longer distances.

Many humbers live in extended nest communities for mutual protection, although there are some solitary species, particularly amongst the larger breeds. Like all mammals they produce live young, in clutches of one to three. Infant humbers are usually capable of flight after two to three weeks, though they continue to suckle their young for up to two months. Some humber colonies show evidence of social organisation, with elderly individuals losing the ability to fly and taking responsibility for caring for infants, in exchange for regurgitated food.
