Orris grows in well in a variety of soils, from well-drained temperate to marshy areas, the amount of available moisture determining the size of the crop. It is moderately tolerant to salt, so is often a staple of peoples living in coastal areas subject to storm tide inundation, though the saltier the soil, the lower the yield.

Orris is a particularly found in the cuisine of Ororr, particularly in the coastal regions of the north and northwest.
