Seqal

Seqal is a historic city in Ororr, at the confluence of two tributaries of the River Wiyel. The ancient city was cut into the rock between the two rivers, making it one of the “Hidden Cities” that were mainly underground. Today the majority of the population live in New Seqal, built on the river bank a little downriver from the Old City.

Since its foundation by the ancient Issid people during the Jade Epoch, it has been an independent city-state, an integral part of the Empire of Dor-en-Sann, and today is one of the great holy cities of the Shouft, the great pilgrimage of the Therist faithful.

In ancient times Seqal was immensely wealthy and powerful, but today is it is relatively small compared to modern cities, and reliant on tourism and pilgrims.

Construction

Seqal is often called the “Hidden City” because the oldest sections were built underground, in the spur of rock that separates the two rivers. The old city consists of a warren of tunnels and chambers, forming homes, markets, courtyards and temples. Digging two storeys deep into living rock meant there was no need to import wood or other building materials, and made the undercity cool and sheltered from the heat of the surrounding desert.

Dwellings are lit by courtyards and light shafts open to the sky, watered by wells dug down into the water table. Many light wells were originally natural pits in the karst rock. The largest pit marks the centre of the Old City, a sink hole called The Eye, which opens onto a natural pool far below. In ancient times citizens cut two tunnels east and west, connecting the Eye to the two rivers, flooding the lower levels of the city and forming a harbour. The Eye is the old city's central harbour.

In ancient times the Old City was accessible by rope bridges linking to the east and west banks of the river. These bridges were of a sturdy cylindrical design with cross-netting and planks for stability. Their key ropes were replaced on a three yearly cycle, each rope coloured red, white or greenplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigGreen

depending on year of replacement. The rope dyes also acted as bonding and preservative.

The cramped space, small harbour signs difficult access led to the development of New Seqal, on the steeply sloping river banks slightly to the north of the Old City. The “new” city was constructed in the 3rd century BME, after Seqal had been reduced to a satrapy of the old empire. The new city had houses of more conventional Ensanni design, though clustered on the steep cliffside and partly dug into the rock. The two halves banks of the city are connected by boat, with wooden piers jutting out into the river. The civic administration and palaces of the wealthy are built atop the hills, with nimble-footed drort bearing litters through the vertiginous streets.
