Thurals are made from various materials, from simple pottery to sumptuous jewelled metal. They consist of bowl, either standing on three legs or hanging from three chains, sometimes with a conical cover with decorative vent holes. Incense was a common feature of Ensanni Imperial religious ritual, therefore the early Mother Church frowned on incense and thurals as “imperialist idolatry”. Thurals in public places are still opposed by church traditionalists, but are accepted by mainstream Ororrans. They are rarely seen in community pandatas except in larger cities, where the incense serves the dual purpose of driving out pests and insanitary smells. Thurals are also used in colder and mountainous climates, as braziers to keep out the cold.
