Herbs

Herbs are usually green plants cultivated and used for use in medicine, cooking or for other purposes.

Herblore is the traditional practice of making decoctions, extracts, powders and other preparations from the roots, leaves, seeds, bark and fruit of plants found across the world.

Medicinal Herbs

  • Ameli berry - spiny plant with long, thin yellow/green leaves, found in open temperate plains and grasslands. A decoction from the berry’s skin is used to heighten senses, and also increases adrenalin production.
  • Batwing - this is in fact a glandular secretion from the black-back salamander of the jungles of eastern Munatanplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigMunatan

Munatan [Moo-Nah-Tahn] is the southernmost region of Anásthias, south of the Dun Trisan mountains. The name possibly derives from a ancient Thalsic, meaning “Land of One Sun”, since the daystar is not visible in the southern hemisphere. Or it may be a reference to the Manthi people who were once the majority population of western Munatan. The term is an OrorrOrorrOrorrHartheraHartheraOrorrOrorrOrorrHartheraHartheraHartheran
. It is a quite a potent neurotoxin, used in small doses when mixed with hormonal agents to cause neurochemical imbalance.
  • Bluefern root - extract of a fern with distinctive blue feathery fronds, found principally in the middle latitudes of Anásthiasplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigAnásthias

Anásthias [a-NAS-thee-ass / ænæsθiːæs], or [an-ass-THEE-as] is an equatorial island continent, heart of the Civilised World. The north straddles the equator and is hot and humid, while most of the equatorial centre is an upland plateau with fertile river valleys, and stretches of arid plains and desert in the shadow of the mountains. The south is temperate but more wild, separated from the civilisations of the north by the almost impassable HartheraOrorr
. Its white tendrilous roots are ground and dried to form a potent narcotic, commonly known as sylin (sie-lin), which in larger doses increases memory but can induce feelings of extreme paranoia and anxiety.
  • Cobine, Efelax - (see Bestiary) powerful sedative extracted from this carnivorous plant, known as Cobine.
  • Eyeroot - the distinctive black root of a succulent, thistle-like plant found in dry plainlands, generally in lower latitudes but growing also in the plains about Béan. The common root is tasteless but highly nutritious, but only roots with the distinctive white spots have any pharmacological value. The extract induces extreme nervous tension and anxiety, and is used in small doses to counteract melancholia and lethargy, and to ward off sleep.
  • Firesand - compound formed from a lengthy mineral and vegetable extraction process, containing saltpetre and used by alchemists, with no pharmacological value.
  • Greenwing - luscious green climbing shrub closely related to the modern Kerelian vunndalt, both of which are descended from a common Meronan ancestor. Greenwing tincture is an extremely powerful hallucinogen, being merely mind-altering in small doses. The plant is rare, only growing wild about Rasia but cultivated by private suppliers elsewhere.
  • Grellnut - tough, nut-bearing brown plant found in dry soils across the Natorn Isles and northern Anásthias, the oil from which is a potent restorative used as the base for many remedies.
  • Hemethor - a beautiful purple flowering plant, of whose cotton-like seed pods a barbiturate soporific infusion is made. It is found in the southern Natorn Isles and northern regions of Anásthias.
  • Hemnettle - distinctive plant bearing blue, white and green leaves, found amongst undergrowth in forest clearings and meadows. It is often used in floral arrangements, but its sap is in fact an effective alkaloid poison.
  • Ream Moss - yellow, leafy moss found particularly about windswept rocky coastal uplands, far from areas of human habitation. When dried, it burns to produce a mildly mind-altering effect, primarily influencing perception, but its actual tincture is difficult to produce. The moss contains high levels of magnesium, and burns with a white brilliance.
  • Redweed - seaweed with distinctive scarlet fronds and black pods, the latter being used to produce a useful black dye. The frond extract can be difficult to derive, but produces a narcotic which slows the mind, in larger doses inducing a dream-like state, which can also slow the heart.
  • Scarab - a beetle found in the deserts of Mangasor, the powdered amphetamine extract of which is used to increase metabolism, and as such is sometimes used to treat obesity. It can however be fatal to those with a weak constitution, placing strain on the heart.
  • Silvanor - a small but extremely beautiful yellow-white flower found in Munatan. The root essence can reduce will, and thereby make an individual susceptible to suggestion and questioning.
  • Traslig - common reed found in sheltered marshy areas throughout the Natorn Isles. The decoction of its green outer bark heightens perception but dulls thought and intuition, but it must be noted that the green layer is found only in spring and summer.
  • Velgris, Climbing - temperate flowering forest vine, the stamens of which are used to produce velgris extract, a soporific inducing calm and dulling senses

Narcotics

  • SYLIN - the processed extract of the bluefern root, giving a potent narcotic and euphoric effect. It is primarily a psychological addiction, and its expense, due to its comparative rarity and lengthy purification process, makes it a vice of the affluent.
  • AMELI - ameli berries are chewed for their effect, which heightens senses. It is eaten by some rural workers, but is not otherwise in widespread use.
  • STONE - velgris essence, generally used as a soporific but in larger doses inducing a brief heightened state and prolonged calm, especially when inhaled as powder.
  • GREENWING - rare plant whose extract is a very expensive, but very effective, psychotropic drug, inducing extreme euphoria, as well as some hallucinogenic effects. It is grown mostly by private cultivators in the south, and imported to Anrelplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigAnrel Isles

Anrel [ANN-rel], or the Anrel Isles, is the most northerly island group in the Natorn Archipelago. It consists of three major islands and numerous smaller ones. The largest, colloquially if infrequently called Mainland, is divided between the kingdoms of Trésard and Narette. The island
. (N.B. It is known elsewhere as Vunndalt.)
  • MOSS - powdered ream moss extract is a much more powerful mind-altering drug than its impure form, and is in fact an amphetamine derivative. Moss is becoming one of the most widely used drugs, spread by enclaves of the Webrin Compact, and much of its difficult production is carried out in Béan (possibly with the collusion of the Apothecaries’ Guild, who gain massive revenue from it, and guarantee protection from Hexact santioning.)
