One besan is subdivided into eight melea, with one melea divided into eight chiba, one besan being 64 chiba. The besan is a direct continuation of the currency of Dor-en-Sann, which was based on the octal trade numbering system of the Doroun people. For many centuries the church-state intended reforming the currency or creating a new system, but this proved so thorny and controversial a problem that it was never carried out.
