During the Hartheran colonisation of the island, Besoadd was to some extent threatened, since those working in Hartheran employment were required to speak Hartraan. There are many expatriate communities, particularly in Anrel and in major port cities of Anásthias. However, a majority of expatriates speak the distinctive sailor's dialect from Famul, rather than the more formal courtly tongue still retained by the Sann'ali Court-in-Exile in Belisan Freeport, and this has essentially become modern standard Besoaad.
