Brumal Deep

The Brumal Deep is an oceanic basin in the Polassirn Ocean, east of the Natorn Sea. The basin is a roughly circular area, which at nearly 9000 m is the deepest sea in the Civilised World. It has no greenfish so is not visited by fishermen or whales. It is considered a treacherous area for shipping, with mountainous waves particularly during the storm tide season.

The area is subject to an oceanic gyre, a vortex of water which rotates anticlockwise. The southerly currents were traditionally used by Sann'ali merchant shipping visiting the Eastern Isles. According to sailor legend, vessels straying too far into the Deep risk being trapped or lost in the maelstrom. In reality the currents are strongest at the margins of the Deep, the central waters actually being calmer.
