The Hartheran Union, commonly named Harthera, is an imperialist maritime nation state dominating the northeast of Anásthias. It is one of the two great powers of the modern epoch, arguably the most technologically and militarily powerful nation in the world, only matched by the vast size and wealth of its neighbour, viridOrorrMEOrorrOrorrOrorrOrorr, though today most of the practical running of the nation is devolved to other buildings in the city.

The fortress has a fearful reputation as both the centre of power, and as a prison where political agitators disappear and are never seen again.
The complex sits on a promontory of rock at the confluence of the River Velun and the River Verais. It has been constructed in phases throughout history, producing a jumble of stone walls, towers, courtyards and state rooms accumulated over the thousand years of its history. In ancient times it was a religious site sacred to the nature-worshipping Kingdom of Emanuné, later becoming a palace, then a fort, a prison, headquarters of the military High Command, and seat of the Terath family.
The northern tip holds the oldest constructions, but the buildings here are half-ruined and said to hold hidden meeting rooms and dank cells where political prisoners languish in the dark.
The southern end has the grandest and most relatively modern buildings, with many courtyards and grandiose gatehouses. Over the centuries rulers who wished to impress their subjects built a grand new facade with sumptuous reception rooms. Entering the modern fortress is like peeling back layers of history.
The main gates open onto the Atendaas, a long tree-lined hill with mansions of the city's most wealthy and powerful.
