In common terms, magic is the art of producing a desired outcome through occult means. Various arts are described as magical, from common street illusionists, village herbalists, and rituals for the intercession of deities. However, true magic is the art and science of elemental mastery, harnessing elemental creatures and instructing them to perform simple or complex tasks.. Devices also require shielding, since elementals will be drawn to thaumic sources and attempt to extract the energy.
Ergothaumics was particularly popular in the city of Rasia, where use of magic was effectively banned. It was mainly used for lighting: ergothaumic lamps being bulky and expensive, but capable of working for an essentially indefinite period of time.
