fish particularly found in warm tropical waters. They have a bony exoskeleton and are predatory, hunting in packs. They are able to feed on blood, often swarming around larger animals and embedding themselves into the flesh. They are fast swimmers, capable of launching themselves out of the water to escape enemies.

This behaviour makes them particularly hazardous to human sailors, since swarms of gnatfish sometimes launch themselves out of the water onto ships, thinking of them as prey. Gnatfish are generally more of a frightening annoyance to sailors, though a roused swarm can be deadly to any sailors unlucky enough to fall in the water.
