Since ancient times it has been rich with freshwater greenfish, a vital human food source which was the foundation of the Siltorn Republic, one of the most cultured and long-lasting civilisations in history.
The lake is about 240 km long and about 100 km at its widest point, making it practically an inland sea with its own microclimate. It has numerous islands mostly near the shore, the largest being Semben Island, 12 km long and 4 wide. It has been variously used as a prison or religious retreat.
