It is played by two to four players, on a board or tray with a lip to retain the counters. Boards are either polished or lacquered with amberglass for a smooth finish, and many are highly decorated. The board is painted with a circle in the centre and semicircles in each corner, representing areas in play. Each player starts with six or seven counters in their corner, taking turns to strike counters into the centre circle, or to knock out those of opponents. Players can only strike counters within their semicircular area. When no more counters can be played, the game is over, and the player with most coins in the centre circle wins. Each player takes turns to push a counter into the centre by striking it with another counter, or striker.
