Ream moss

Ream mosses are a family of green plants and lichens which thrive in the boundary between green and virid ecosystems. The boundary between biomes is called the “burn zone” due to the red and yellow colour of lichens which colonise the area.

The ream mosses include lichens (composites of plant and fungal cells) as well as the true plant mosses. Areas colonised by ream moss have a profusion of different varieties depending on conditions. The red lichens are often the first to encroach virid margins, followed by the yellow, and eventually the more complex green mosses. As the soil develops, more complex green grasses, bushes and trees are able to survive in the soil, and out-compete the mosses.

Ream moss spores are used to reclaim virid land and making it suitable for agriculture. Viridplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigVirid

jungle is first slashed and burned, then ream moss spores are applied to the land. Mosses quickly grow on the ashen waste, killing any remaining virid roots and build a soil structure suitable for green plants and eventually crops.

Some varieties of ream moss are highly in essential nutrients, and included in animal feed for livestock.

Ream mosses also have medicinal uses, having antibacterial and antifungal properties. In folk medicine they are commonly used in dressing wounds, applied as a poultice. They are also used as viricidal agents, used to treat virid infections like veilspor. Some varieties of ream moss, particularly the larger flowering kinds, also have mild narcotic properties.

ream mosses are revered because of their ability to fight virid incursion. Ream moss is used in religious and folk rituals for decoration and as symbolic offerings to the gods. Ream moss is sometimes dried and smoked by people in rural areas, or made into tea. In recent decades more potent narcotic varieties have been developed, which are either chewed or used as snuff. The manufacture and distribution of these psychoactive mosses is banned in Trésard.
