In small does, salix is an effective painkiller, numbing pain without causing drowsiness or other side effects. In even moderately higher doses salix causes paralysis, eventually paralysing the lungs causing asphyxiation and death.

Because of its toxicity, salix is heavily diluted in a one-to-fifteen ratio with common salts. Nevertheless poisoning can easily occur if not administered correctly.
