Sump Gas

Sump gas, or sumpgas, is methane gas produced from decomposition. It was originally the name for gas bubbling up from marshland, but is also manufactured as a fuel for city lighting.

Historically many cities in Anrel had sump gas systems, by which solid human and animal waste, as well as domestic and farm refuse was fed into fermentation tanks filled with sumpwort, a mix of specially bred digestive organisms. The resultant gas was siphoned off, stored and pressurised for distribution by metal piping, primarily to power civic lighting, while the effluent was useful as a fertiliser and soil conditioner.

The only surviving system is the cave-city of Beyán. Sumpgas is bred in massive tanks in the lowest caves of the city, pressurised using wind-powered turbines and used to light the network of public tunnels and public spaces, as well as some homes.

Anrel [ANN-rel], or the Anrel Isles, is the most northerly island group in the Natorn Archipelago. It consists of three major islands and numerous smaller ones. The largest, colloquially if infrequently called Mainland, is divided between the kingdoms of Trésard and Narette. The island
such as Traste and Rana had sumpgas lighting, but disabled their gas systems during the Long War, after the horrifying gas explosion and fire which destroyed the city of Teran Muel during an assault by Narettien forces. So complete and devastating was the fire that other cities feared a similar destruction, and so removed or disabled their pipes and fermentation systems.
