The war ended with Vetthi ascendency, and an agreement of non-aggression and religious and military co-operation between the two which is still in effect.

Background

Ororr's aggressive expansion during the first millennium had not managed to include the island of Vetth, partly due to consolidating its land empire, but mainly due to Ororr's weakness at sea. From the 8th century Ororr came into increasing economic conflict with Hartheraplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigHarthera

The Hartheran Union, commonly named Harthera, is an imperialist maritime nation state dominating the northeast of Anásthias. , which had the effect of strengthening Vetthi trade, to the extent that the Republic's merchants held a near monopoly in the vital Ororran port of Toborr. A large number of Vetthi had converted to Therism, but there was a great fear of divergence from the Mother Church, and the risk of schismatic heresy. Consequently, Ororran leaders sought to control Vetth by bringing it under the rule of Ororr.

The late 7th century saw several skirmishes between Vetthi and Ororran ships.

The War

Ororr had long claimed the Guree Isles, and in 810 they pressed their claim to the island of Maiyenet by building up the town of Net with a fortified harbour. The Vetthi took this as a serious provocation. Ororr, with its relatively slow, heavy and ungainly ships, needed Maiyenet as a staging post to launch an attack on the Vetthi mainland, while Vetthi ships, though smaller, were able to operate with far greater speed and skill.

Ororr began covertly amassing a fleet on the coast of Maiyenet, but unknown to them, the Vetthi were well aware of this sneak attack. The Republic launched a combined night-time raid which burned Net town and the ships within it, catching the Ororrans totally unprepared. The Ororrans destroyed Vetthi merchant ships and sunk or impounded vessels in the harbour of Toborr, along with their crew. Ships on either side engaged either other at sea and even in far-flung foreign ports.

With a war on two fronts, Ororr narrowly averted an alliance between Harthera and Vetth by negotiating a hasty peace with the Vetthi, promising future non-aggression, respect for their territorial integrity and reopening ports to Vetthi trade. Harthera meanwhile supplied arms and covert assistance to the Cavannese rebels, a guerilla campaign that continually flared up in succeeding decades.
