The polar continent has been rarely visited, since its rugged icebound coast is riddled with icebergs and fjords of precipitous rock with nothing of use or interest to explorers. The interior is high and mountainous, with plateaux up to five thousand metres high, covered with permanent snow and ice, its glaciers creeping slowly down to the sea.
