In common terms, magic is the art of producing a desired outcome through occult means. Various arts are described as magical, from common street illusionists, village herbalists, and rituals for the intercession of deities. However, true magic is the art and science of elemental mastery, harnessing elemental creatures and instructing them to perform simple or complex tasks., including spoken and gestural languages used to communicate with silfs, and magic scripts used to record those languages, often surrounded by the paraphernalia of costume and ritual with which some societies dressed up otherwise simple thaumaturgy.

The Rasian Academy is the common name for the Grand Academy of Rasia, the greatest institution of magic and learning in the Anrel Isles.. The former have been largely lost, Rasian style magic being the only one which survives into the modern world.
- Chantry - a popular style in the pre-Classical era of Rasia, this style involved singing, or chanting, the long and often complex sequents required to instruct an elemental. The advantage of Chantry was to make incantation a more pleasant task, and more easily memorable.
- Modal - main style in the Classical period. Sequents were broken up into a number of small sections, so that whole programs could be built using existing sequents .
