Geography

Modern Remel is a huge sprawling conurbation thriving on trade, agriculture, industries like dye production, and a wide variety of manufacturing. The river, its loops, tributaries and many canals are crucial to the geography of the city. Because of its history Remel really comprises three cities, as well as numerous towns and villages, which have grown together into a single conurbation.

The Old City, on an island to the north, fell into ruin and is now a town with farmland to the east. The Kings' City is the administrative, bureaucratic and cultural centre, with one of the foremost religious training institutions in Ororr. The New City to the west was once swampland, but is now the modern commercial centre of the city.

History

The site was first settled as one of the Issid Block States during the Jade Epoch, and has been in continuous occupation for upwards of nine thousand years. In the Celadon Epoch it was the capital of the powerful and sophisticated city-state of Ancient Remel, which ruled the surrounding valley and controlled the River Wiyel as far as Seqal in the south and Toborr in the north. The city declined due to changes in local climate, erosion by the river, and aggressive competition from the Gaal Empire and later the Empire of Dor-en-Sann.

In 1603 BME the city was refounded as the capital of the imperial Kingdom of Garnarré-Remel. The ancient city had been slowly obliterated by the shifting river, so the new city was built on slightly higher ground to the south. The ancient city with its network of canals became the modern city docks, its stones cannibalised to construct new buildings. Garnarré-Remel grew and flourished to become a vast metropolis of parks and palaces, one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the empire.

With the rise of the Mother Army led by the Great Prophet Therion, the city fell after a short siege in 42 ME. Though the city had no walls, its vast size and number of forts and military docks made the city a difficult prospect to seize and hold by an army of infantry and cavalry.

Remel was the first great imperial city to be besieged by the Mother Army, and the Prophet intended its conquest to be a lesson to the Empire as a whole. As the Army attacked, Garnarré troops engaged in urban war in the New City whilst garrison troops razed the middle ground, demolishing streets to form barricades and defenses. While the city burned, the invading troops withdrew and there was a lull in battle. As the sun set in the east, women flocked to the Temple District to pray to the Lady of Salvation. According to legend, as the light fell, the great golden statue of the Mother Of All Aspects, in the greatest and most holy temple in the city, stood up with a grinding of metal. The statue cast aside herplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigHerbs

Thereafter the morale of the defenders was broken, and the city was absorbed into the new nation of Ororr.
