He was aged 11 during the invasion and conquest of his home country of Sann'al by Harthera. In 1091 he was smuggled out of the country along with many senior officials and a significant number of national treasures. After appeals to the royal families of Anrel, he and his Sann'ali court in exile were permitted to settle in the port city of Belisan, which already had a significant Sannalese merchant population.

The court-in-exile took over the tumbledown fort on Abel Hill east of the city. He grew up there as exiled ruler of the former Kingdom of Sann'al, head of the royal House of Berill and de facto leader of Besoan exiles in the Anrel Isles. He was given an excellent education, and under his youthful encouragement he reinvigorated the Sann'ali Merchant Fleetplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigSann'ali Merchant Fleet

The Sann'ali Merchant Fleet is a maritime consortium of merchants and captains loyal to the Sann'ali Court-in-Exile. The fleet itself consists of former ships of the Sannalese Royal Navy, Sannali merchant ships who were at sea or in distant ports at the time of the Hartheran Conquest, as well as newer vessels purchased or constructed since that time.
based in the Freeport, amassing profits intended to assist in the liberation of their homeland. He rebuilt the old fortress renaming it Abel Palace, a modern court and centre of arts and learning earning the envy of the Margrave of Belisan on the opposite side of the city.

In the 1110s he hosted many cultural events in Belisan, attempting to raise money for the reconquest efforts, and to woo important Anrelian nobles and merchants to supporting his cause.
