For many centuries Catáos has prospered from tolls on its portage route, the winding road that carries trade from docks below the falls, to ships which carry goods upriver.
The name is thought to derive from Old Daltirich, ca-tire-rols, “where Tire falls”, referring to the waters of the River Tire, a local name for the Green Wiyel.
Cataos marks the edge of the Deltirot Plateau, where a steep escarpment falls down to the floor of the Wiyel Valley 300m below. The Cataos Falls are in fact a series of seven cataracts, connected by violent rapids. They are sometimes called the Seven Souls after the beliefs of the old imperial church: the first three cataracts (Vis, Jhem and Ken) being minor, the last four (Bis, Ao, Tas and Baat) being increasingly sharp, with Baat, being a terrifying thirty metre tumbling drop through sharp rocks, befitting it being named after the darkest part of the soul. The last is what common people think of as the Cataos Falls, but technically the falls consist of all seven.
Due to the falls, passengers and cargo heading into Deltirot use the portage road winding up through the hills past the falls, to the city of Cataos itself. Beyond the city, the first three cataracts are navigable via locks.
Cataos City lies at the Third Cataract, Ken, protected on both sides from attack by river by the waterfalls above and below. It lies at a vital strategic position at the head of the portage road, effectively controlling all trade and travel into Deltirot from the north. The city is built from the local buttery stone, a well-ordered and attractive city with impressive views over the surrounding landscape.
Locally, residents of the city call themselves Kenners, after the cascade - ken being logic and right thinking.
