The concepts of race and ethnicity in the Civilised World are complex, related to issues of history, geography and culture. The Kokway were once nomadic pastoral people who moved around the island. Settlers from the Kingdom of Heronbar built the city of Terab, leading to intense conflict with the Kokway who relied on the area for fishing and perennial food crops. Kokway numbers were decimated by starvation and conflict with the Heronbaht colonists, an animosity which continues to this day. This feeling was exploited by the Hartherans, who exploited their claims of “Iskean brotherhood” to invade the island, displace the old Heronbaht aristocracy and set up an Kokway puppet government.
