He is most famous for his disturbing depictions of warfare, violence, and the martyrdom of saints of the Heterodox Church. From his writings he is known to have been a pacifist and agnostic, who detested nationalism, violence, and the propaganda of the Church. Despite this his powerful images were happily co-opted by the state after his death.
