Urra Sjala was a priestess or wise women living in the town of Souto in Ennseperans, now in modern Ororr. According to legend she challenged troops of the Mother Army seeking to take her town. She refused to be converted to Therism, and was tortured and dismembered. Her mouth was said to continually chant prayers, even after her head was cut off.

She is revered with a two-day feast in autumn.

History

Urra Sjala was born around 630 CE, in the town of Jorapor in modern Ororr, a prosperous trade centre and home to many Heterodox missionaries.

Sjala was strong-willed and intelligent. Stories tell of her debating theology from the age of eight, and in her teens she became a missionary in her own right, travelled throughout Ennseperans, preaching and gaining many converts on the way. Despite being little more than a girl she preached to thousands, in market squares, in fields, on grassy hillsides, spreading the Heterodox philosophy that all traditions have a home within the Church.

Martyrdom

After gaining a significant following and converting many hundreds of thousands to her mission, in 655 ME she and her small party were intercepted in the jungle northeast of modern Clanisjpor by an Ororran war party. They butchered her followers, tied her to a wheel and subjected her to rape and mutilation. According to legend, at the height of her suffering she spontaneously burst into flames, holy fire sent down by the All-God.

The surviving torturers fled the scene, some killing themselves after what they had done, while others told their story of miraculous divine intervention, proof that Urra Sjala was truly Holy.

Legacy

The Cult of Urra Sjala was a great rallying point for the Ennseperan Empire's political and military opposition to the encroachment of Ororrplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigOrorr

The death of Urra Sjala has been portrayed in many works of art, including Sjao Sjinezi's chilling painting Urra Sjala Upon the Wheel and Sonoré Calvatti's oratorio The Spirit Comes.

The Order of Urra Sjala

The Order of Urra Sjala is a missionary organisation established in 953 ME, with the aim of bringing Heterodoxy to the world.
