Like most virid vegetation the skin and flesh are toxic when eaten whole, but the strained juice can be consumed safely, with a sweet flavor and a characteristic burning sensation. It is also used to make limeta leather - boiled with sugar, spread into a layer and dried in the sun before being cut into strips, making a chewy confection.

Limeta wood is resistant to pests and corrosion, so is used for small items like chairs, jewellery and cosmetic boxes, and other small personal items. Limeta branches were traditionally woven to make Gobalay coracles, one-person boats used to cross rivers and for fishing in shallow water.
