Perilth

Perilth (Besoaad), or Beridt (Hartraan), is a port city in Besoa, once renowned as the wealthiest city in the Natorn Archipelago. In former times it was the royal capital of the Kingdom of Sann'al, known as The Silver City both for its wealth, for the blue and silver banners of the Sann'alese kings, and for the sparkling waters of its many fountains.

The city was razed during the Hartheran invasion of the island, and today its once-bustling harbour is desolate, half abandoned by its populace.

Geography

Perilth is built on Perilth Sound, a deep inlet in northern Besoa. The sound is a glacial fjord with steep cliff sides and deep water, so that even during low storm tides there is still access to the sea. The city itself is built into the steep hills and cliffs, characterised by narrow streets with numerous stairs and switchback streets. The architecture consists of local black granite, most buildings being tall and thin with characteristic high pointed roofs to deflect the rain.

Perilth Castle occupies a promontory overlooking the city. Its artillery towers were placed to command a wide angle of the bay, protecting it from naval assault. The city's hinterland in the hills above is arable, with fields, orchards and abundant herding, once the country estates of the Sann'ali nobility. Perilthi cuisine was particularly noted for its combination of meat, fruit and seafood, a combination which is now popular in Belisan Freeport.

A famous feature of Perilth was its abundance of fountains. Numerous streams from the hills behind Perilth were channelled towards the castle at the top of the city, where they ran into huge stone reservoir tanks. These powered impressive fountains and pools within the castle grounds. Fresh water also flowed into a succession of cisterns at each of the seven chief levels of the city, powering fountains in the main plazas which supplied both drinking water and created cool air. Following the Hartheran invasion, this water system was destroyed. The upper mountain aqueduct was broken, the water pouring through the broken roof of the castle to scour the main hall, and then cascading down through the city's deserted streets.

Helevos has eight thousand years of recorded history, with archeology, artefacts and myth stretching back much further. There are two dominant views of human history: the theological view that the whole world and humanity were created some thousands of years ago in one instant of creation; the second, that all humanity descends from a race of fallen demigods called the viridEmerald EpochBMEgreenBMEAnásthiasAnásthiasBMEAnásthiasfolkloreMiyarrisGodmenBMEMEOrorrHartheraMEviridAnásthi… the city was much larger, occupying the shores of the sound in times when the sea level was much lower, with some scant evidence of very ancient occupation from the late Jade Epoch.

It became the capital of the Kingdom of Sann'al in the second century BME, until the Hartheran conquest at the end of the Bizoan War.
