Purists were notorious for their “Spirit Patrols”, groups of zealots who would patrol the streets of towns and cities rooting out immoral behaviour, and punishing heretics and blasphemers.

One key innovation of Purism was the pilgrimage, called the Puran or Cleansing Path, a spiritual journey to the realm of the ancestors involving fasting, mortification of the flesh, and exposure to the elements including naked immersion in cold sea water, or lengthy vigils atop mountains or cliffs.
