Sump Gas

Sump gas, or sumpgas, is methane gas produced from decomposition. It was originally the name for gas bubbling up from marshland, but is also manufactured as a fuel for city lighting.

Historically many cities in Anrelplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigAnrel Isles

Anrel [ANN-rel], or the Anrel Isles, is the most northerly island group in the Natorn Archipelago. It consists of three major islands and numerous smaller ones. The largest, colloquially if infrequently called Mainland, is divided between the kingdoms of Trésard and Narette. The island
had sump gas systems, by which solid human and animal waste, as well as domestic and farm refuse was fed into fermentation tanks filled with sumpwort, a mix of specially bred digestive organisms. The resultant gas was siphoned off, stored and pressurised for distribution by metal piping, primarily to power civic lighting, while the effluent was useful as a fertiliser and soil conditioner.

The only surviving system is the cave-city of Beyánplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigBeyän

Beyän [bay-AHN] (arch. Bé'an, Ben Akir) is a city in central plains of the Kingdom of Trésard. For millennia it has been an important centre for trade, arts, manufacturing and governance. His skills in composition of letters and speeches enabled his master to rise to a powerful position, so that the young Zinnober acquired status and access to the imperial and religious archives of the city.

In his spare time over a number of years, he composed The Glories of the En-Sanni Peoples, from Inception to Ascension, better known as his History of the Empire. It was first circulated amongst powerful friends of his master, and eventually published to enormous acclaim. The work, which gloried the empire's unity as its greatest strength, became a masterwork of his age, disseminated throughout the empire and gifted to allies and enemies in gloriously bound volumes.

His success won him fame, wealth and a position at the imperial courts as historian and scribe. Many of his letters survive into the modern era, showing his whimsical and slightly satyrical view of life at court, and the imperial church bureaucracy.

He wrote many other histories, most of them obsequious yet slyly ironic biographies glorify ancestors of prominent people, written for money, but his greatest work is his History of All. The college considered quiristry an art, encompassing both thaumaturgical processes as well as manual skills. It was unusual in operating facilities not only within the Academy grounds, but in the city itself. Paper-making, binding, ink manufacture, book selling, and all the other industries necessary for an academic city were intimately linked to the College of Quirists. They worked closely with the College of Archivists in producing rare records stored only in thaumaturgical form, as well as producing the day to day textbooks necessary for the operation of the whole Academy.

Throughout history, while books were mainly copied by hand or later using crude printing techniques, the College's master-quirists could exactly replicate any kind of book in exquisite detail, in a fraction of the time. Their resources were limited and the skill required was very high, so that the College concentrated on thaumaturgical works and important historic documents. Consequently quirist books were very rare outside Rasia.

Over time the commercial aspects of the college were superceded by private enterprises in the city, particularly in the manufacture of paper and ink, booking binding, and book selling. However the quirists retained an important status within the life of the Academy up until its fall.
