The Natorn Sea is a region of oceanic ridge, separating the Polassirn Ocean and the Redeeming Ocean. Islands in the ridge form the Natorn Archipelago.

Etymology

The name may be derived from ancient Ahngrit, meaning “near/of our birth”, referring to the legend of the Godmen in which humanity is said to have originated in region now lost beneath the sea. It also relates to the god

, and thereafter was abandoned. Much of the old city has been swept away by shifts in the coastline and estuary, leaving little more than pitted hills dotted with rubble, regarded as a fearful place of ill omen and little visited except by animal herders. A great deal of stone and other material from the ruined city was used in the construction of Por Muel, though buildings made with obvious architectural features from Teranen are considered cursed.

Name

Teran Muel means “across from Muul” in Old Aralsic. Muúl became an island around 3000 BME, when rising sea levels marked the transition to the Beryl Epoch, so the city's name dates from some time in this period. Teranen was the more common name for the city used in everyday speech.

History

Teranen was the oldest known city in the Anrel Isles. According to the Tirennion, the city was built on a hillside marking the easternmost boundary of Godmen metropolis, Yendim. It was lit day and night by everflame. The ancient city centre had a series of circular streets divided into districts. This changed as the city expanded, although the centre of the old city retained its curving street plan. In later ages the city was lit by sump gas, a similar system to that still seen in Beyan today.

Tales of the city's destruction are legendary. During the sack, gas pipes were smashed leading to an uncontrollable fire that destroyed virtually every building and killed tens of thousands, making it the worst atrocity of the war. The site was subsequently abandoned because the sacking destroyed the city's sea defences, which were overwhelmed by storm tidesplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigStorm tides

Storm tides are particularly high tides, often accompanied by storm surges and dangerous flooding, which occur on Helevos every 1.3 solar years when Helevos comes into conjunction with the giant planet Kwato'or. Storm tides are at their peak within a two week period, and at their most severe when accompanied by natural storms.
.

After the war, a great deal of stone, brick and rubble from the ruins of Teran Muel was used in the construction of the new capital on the north bank, Por Muel.
