Munatan [Moo-Nah-Tahn] is the southernmost region of Anásthias, south of the Dun Trisan mountains. The name possibly derives from a ancient Thalsic, meaning “Land of One Sun”, since the daystar is not visible in the southern hemisphere. Or it may be a reference to the Manthi people who were once the majority population of western Munatan. The term is an OrorrOrorrOrorrHartheraHartheraOrorrOrorrOrorrHartheraHartheraHartheran

History

In ancient mariners' folk tales, Veedormim was known as the Orthé Rirba, the “Golden Cities”, with mythical towers of gold circled by dragons.

Its ancient civilisation was established during the Celadon Epoch, circa 4000 BME. Manthi migrants called the Nabthi arrived in the region presumably after having to cross the more hostile Gyeil lands to the north. They settled and greened the region, building a network of canals and establishing numerous farming settlements. Their early religion was dedicated to the sun, vital to the success of their crops in an often cloudy and rainy environment.

Sun-worship developed into the national religion, Cheliga-Sujata. Priest-kings built megalithic step-tower temples, from stone borne hundreds of miles from the hills to the cities, on rafts floated down the canals. These feats of engineering led to the development of engineering and construction technology to a great degree, but their isolation and lack of access to mineral ores meant that metal tools and weapons were rare. The kings often went to war with encroaching tribes, particularly the Manthi and Essep, and though their military tactics were highly developed, their weapons were limited to spears and bows. Despite this, they were able to maintain their vitality and independence for many thousands of years, despite climatic change and the threat of migration from the north.

Veedormim came under increasing pressure from the newly founded Ennseperan Empire, which came to surround its lands to the north and east. Flooded with missionaries from the virile Heterodox Church, social instability and numerous border conflicts led to its leadership falling entirely under the sway of the new empire, and it was annexed as a network of client states. Ennseperan rule lasted from 213-689 ME, when, during the War of Schisms, Veedormin nationalists overthrew their colonial overlords and set up a unified nation state for the first time.

Veedormim has suffered numerous tyrants as well as periods of peaceful commonwealth rule, but has fiercely retained its independence. However, today it is an almost entirely Heterodox nation, though elements of the old sun worship are still retained in church rituals and rural festivals.

Government

After centuries of occupation, modern Veedormim is a confederation of autonomous provinces and polities who operate together with common laws, currency, trade and military, under a constitution called the Mutual Protectorate. Each polity maintains its own militia, carrying out military exchanges with various twinned polities, and particularly lending forces as needed to polities on the borders, in cities and ports. Polities are all technically sovereign, but under the Protectorate operate a common coinage, require maintenance of roads, and operate regulations to enable trade, but otherwise they are technically independent microstates.

Consequently Veedormim has been a favourite location for rebels, outlaws and freethinkers fleeing Hesjbagaaia and other nations, since extraditing individuals from polities is difficult, since the person can easily skip to the next town.

Religion

Modern Veedormim is officially part of the Heterodox Church, using the principle standards of worship along with many local customs integrated into local religious practice according to the principles of Heterodoxy.

Historically Veedormim had a dualistic traditional faith. A solar cult with a heirarchy of Sun Priests ruled the day, ran state institutions, collected taxes and officiated at marriages and state rituals. The Night Priests were an outlet for darker human impulses, both worshipped and feared. The Death Breather cult still survives in Veedormim, despite being officially outlawed.
