Ennseperan Empire

The Holy Empire of EnSann and Essep, commonly called the Ennseperan Empire or simply Ennseperans, was a historic state in the southwest of Anásthiasplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigAnásthias

Anásthias [a-NAS-thee-ass / ænæsθiːæs], or [an-ass-THEE-as] is an equatorial island continent, heart of the Civilised World. The north straddles the equator and is hot and humid, while most of the equatorial centre is an upland plateau with fertile river valleys, and stretches of arid plains and desert in the shadow of the mountains. The south is temperate but more wild, separated from the civilisations of the north by the almost impassable HartheraOrorr, lasting from 101-683 ME.

It encompassed the modern nation of Hesjbagaaia and surrounding territories, plus the southwestern provinces of modern Ororr. Ennseperans began as a rump state of the ancient Empire of Dor-en-Sann, which managed to forge an independent identity and expand deep into Munatan. Forced ever southward by the growth of Ororrplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigOrorr

Ororr [o-ROARR, ɒ̝rɔ'ɾ], also called the Holy Motherland of Ororr, is a theocratic nation in Anásthias, one of the world's great powers. It the largest nation in the world, perhaps the largest empire in history, occupying the entire northwest of the continent between the mountains and the sea. Ororrviridlanguagelanguagelanguage, the empire was finally destroyed in the civil and religious war known as the War of Schisms.

Calendar

This followed centuries of rivalry, but was a mutually beneficial union for trade and for military assistance.

Centuries previously, Deltirot had conquered the region of Vildon, but exercised little central control over the vast region except on the main arterial rivers, leaving the administration to local nobles. Further west was a wild, little known zone, but EnSanni explorers and navigators had seized control of two vital Manthi cities, converting one local tribe to the Faith.

With the old empire falling like straw before the might of the Mother Army, loyalists and refugees fled first south to Deltirot, and then steadily westward through Vildon to new frontier of the Imperial colonies on the west coast. The region had never formally been ruled by the empire, due to its geographic remoteness. It was accessible either by sea, by crossing the inhospitable Outhei Plains to the north, or through Vildon.

As the new faith of the Holy Prophet Therionplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigTherion

The Great Prophet Therion, founder of the Church of the Mother. swept the land, a few of the Gyeil people of Vildon accepted missionaries, but most viewed them with horror as demon-worshippers, and so resisted any attempts to convert or subdue them. Despite being a mostly primitive tribal region, the Gyeil fought a guerilla campaign against any incursions by the “demon worshippers” of the east.

This meant that the rump Ensanni colonies in the southwest, geographically as well as culturally isolated, were able to develop a relatively stable independent nation.

With the new nation of Ororr concentrating on subduing rebellious forces in the old imperial heartlands, the new empire of Ennseperans spread steadily southwards, embracing the local Essep people and battling others til they reached the southern shores of the Great Urash Ocean.

War of Schisms - conflict between two rival emperors after loss of territory to Ororr, one who wished to unify the nation and religion, other who wanted to maintain status quo. War between north and south, northern conservative, southern progressive. Southern eventually driven southwest to Chosilha, backed by Veedormim and despised by Essep. Both nations renamed after war.

At its founding, Rodorigo I embraced the title of King-General, but considered himself still a servant of the fallen Ensanni imperium. His later successors claimed the imperial title, and styled themselves King-Emperor, retrospectively extending the title to their founder.

The empire was originally a strict military hierarchy, but quickly evolved a dual system of government, headed by the King-Emperor. Beneath him were a number of Governor-Generals who were chiefs of the military and governors of the regions. Governor-Generals were originally appointed by the ruler, but became hereditary titles. Over centuries of intermarriage, these shrank from a dozen men to three, a powerful triumvirate who could overrule the King-Emperor himself, and the Patriarch of the Church. By the time of the War of Schisms, the Governor-Generals had gained control over appointment of heads of the church, a corrupting influence which was cited as one of several causes of the war.

As well as the home territories of the empire, colonial territories more distant from the capital were ruled by Viceroys. Viceroyalties were founded particularly in the Manthi nations to the southeast.
